Antique German Clown on a Crescent Moon Hand Blown/Molded Glass Ornament Lauscha. This antique German Hand-Blown and molded glass Christmas ornament hails from the Lauscha region of Germany and would have been a cottage industry effort in the early 1900s. As characters tended to be of popular interest, my research leads me to believe this charming clown is Pierrot, whose origins are in the late seventeenth-century Italian troupe of players performing in Paris known as the Comédie-Italienne. He sits in his white costume on a pink crescent moon with embossed stars. The reverse side is bumpy with a deeply embossed star. Ornament is in all original condition with oxidation of internal silvering and paint loss with a warm patina. No cracks or breaks in the glass. Metal hanging cap fits tightly and most likely original. Ornament will be wrapped in acid-free tissue paper and secured in a sturdy storage box.
